'Albina: The Land of Women' linocut print set

£75.00

A set of three linocut prints created for a Bristol print exhibition 'The Land of Women' inspired by the mythology of Albina.

"Albina was the eldest of 30 daughters born to a wealthy Syrian king. These sisters were known throughout the land for their wild and rebellious behaviour. The king, who
expected obedience from all of his subjects grew tired of their behaviour, and sought
to find a way to bring them under control.
On one fateful day, he gathered the sisters together and in a single ceremony he married each of them off. This, thought the king, would finally put them in their place.
They would now learn restraint and subservience. The sisters were incensed - they had been tricked and were trapped. They got together and hatched a plan. That night whilst they each slept, the sisters killed their husbands.
When the king learned what had happened he was furious, this was the last straw. He
gathered the sisters together and banished them from the land, never to return. They
were packed off on a small wooden boat and cast out to sea.
The boat drifted listlessly, and was tossed for many miles across several days. Through bitter storms and choppy seas the sisters travelled until finally on the horizon there appeared a verdant green sliver of land.
The sisters arrive at this new land, which is entirely uninhabited. As they step off the
boat, the eldest - Albina names the island after herself, this would now become Albion."

The set of three prints are titled;

'Kill the Men Folk' - a one colour (dark pink) linocut print measuring 14cm x 20cm.
'Seek Refuge' - a one colour (turquoise) linocut print measuring 14cm x 20cm.
